History
July 15, 1901
Local 6 of Pittsburgh, PA was founded on July 15, 1901, and serves the tri-state area and surrounding communities. Local 6 and downtown Pittsburgh played an instrumental role in the birth of the IUEC, when 11 men from New York, Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh gathered in the Griswold Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh.
Establishing the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC)
These men represented locals in their cities and decided that there would be great benefits from a broader base of power and representation. Collectively they knew what they wanted and in solidarity worked hard to make it happen. It is said that by lunch the officers of this new union were nominated, elected and installed. Charter fees were applied that day and the six locals transformed into a national trade union.
Charitable Efforts
One of the Local’s proudest moments came when the members of Local 6 formed a partnership with Homes For Our Troops where our members donate their time and building skills to help build homes for disabled veterans who were injured while serving in the military.

Since our humble beginnings in 1902…
We have grown to more than 360 members with over 190 retirees.
The Local’s jurisdiction has expanded out from its roots in Baltimore City to include 18 of Maryland’s 23 counties along with Sussex County Delaware and sharing Kent County Delaware with Local 5. If you follow the Mason-Dixon line from the Appalachian Mountains in western Maryland down to the Atlantic beaches of Rehoboth and Ocean City, you will find our members working and living.
From the steps of the state capital in Annapolis up to the top of the Chesapeake Bay, Local #Local 6 members continue to carry on our union elevator constructor heritage well into the 21st century.
